New Banksy in New Orleans

As it prepares to mark the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has been forced to draw up an emergency evacuation plan to deal with tropical storm Gustav, which is was predicted to reach hurricane strength in the Gulf of Mexico.

Meanwhile, that cheeky chap, good ol’ Banksy has hit the city with some fresh new work.

I am under the impression that the picture of Abraham Lincoln pushing homeless belongings in a cart such as this is a throw back to cartoons of that period mocking our 16th Presidents decision to abolish slavery. This characterization is typically seen in racist propaganda literature. How are you familiar with it? I have been tempted to do a drive-by several times in the past and “white” it out, always wondering the artist’s intent. So tell me..what is your message and why use Lincoln?
