DVD Review: Street Art - Painting the City: London, Paris, Madrid - by Tate Media

To coincide with the recent exhibition, talks and screenings at the Tate Modern, they’ve released a DVD to celebrate the scene we all know and love.

Street Art - Painting the City is a documentary about the scene and is more of an educational tool than a full blown documentary. The film covers Paris, London and Madrid where the focus is on current big names who like to flit about their respective cities making their mark(s).

Blek le Rat, Nano 4814, Nuria, Sweet Toof, Eine, Nonose, Pure Evil, D*Face and Nunca all make an appearance.

I was impressed with the quality of production, and namely the soundtrack, which featured some choice cuts from The Emperor Machine. The docu is a little short, but the story follows the artists in their respective cities and we can hear them talk about the varying approaches to street art across the globe.

You also get a chance to meet (on screen) some of the artists who took part in the first ever Street Art exhibition at the Tate Modern, and they explore the rapidly expanding commercial market, explaining how it’s turning street artists into big earners at the auction houses. Unfortunately this section is rather short, so I do hope they make a return or follow up DVD of sorts to explore this matter further.

Overall, they Tate has posed the question: “What does this growth mean for the formerly underground and anti-establishment scene.

Even though, as previously mentioned, it’s sort, it’s still an interesting watch, and certainly worth the £9.99 price tag. Go grab yourself a copy now

Live East Die Young : PURE EVIL SOLO SHOW at INK_D in Brighton

You can be amongst the first to see Pure Evil’ s first solo show at Ink_d this July at his private view on Thursday, 3rd July from 6.30 - 8.30pm at the Ink_d Gallery in Brighton.

“Using dark humour and twisting symbolism to create new forms, Pure Evil looks at what lurks around the corner on the secret streets of London and sheds light on the things under our noses that we never take the time to notice. The show explores what it means historically to be an East Londoner - how the mind can play tricks and how reality can be much more sinister. From WWII barrage balloon holders to visits from the Pearly Kings and Queens, Pure Evil’s new work will present new stencils and an arsenal of new images including lighter notes of hypnotic visual treats such as neon bunnies, neon butterflies and lightboxes.”

The new show opens to the public on Friday 4th July and runs until Saturday, 2nd August.

Tunnel becomes Banksy art exhibit

The UK Street Art team hit the tunnel earlier today and boy, was it good. EVERYTHING, and i mean everything was very well organised, methodically planned and to heap on top of that a HUGE amount of stunning work from some of the best artists in the world. This was pure genius.

If you’re in London over the bank holiday or at least can travel to London then I suggest that you make the effort to go check it out. You won’t be disappointed. The queues were big, but it took us just over 20 mins to get in and once in, plenty of space to move around and take photos.

For some more information on the display, check the BBC article here

Get ready for a big amount of photos from the event for those of you that can’t make it down.
