Interview: Nick Georgiou: taking street art to a paper level

Helen Soteriou interviews the hugely successful urban sculptor Nick Georgiou about his background and the strange creatures he makes out of the stitched folds of thousands of discarded newspapers.

Can you tell me about yourself?

I was born in Queens, NY in 1980, the youngest of six children, six years after the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus. The occupation set in motion a series of events that would have a profound impact on my life. I spent my childhood surrounded by relatives who were prisoners of war. My father was born in Neo Xopio, Cyprus, which is currently occupied by Turkish troops, and on my mother’s side, she was born in Brooklyn but her family originated from Smyrna, later escaping the fires of 1922.

Shelter calls on budding artists to create the ultimate deck of cards

Shelter has launched a nationwide competition in association with Metro newspaper offering budding artists and designers the chance to display their work alongside the biggest names in British art including Damien Hirst, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.
The housing charity, in association with Leo Burnett London, has invited 52 of the country’s top artists to design a playing card for a unique exhibition as part of its award winning House of Cards campaign.
Launched in February this year, the TV and poster campaign depicts a collapsing house of playing cards to highlight the fragility of Britain’s housing market in which a home is being repossessed every eight minutes.
The charity has held back one card and is now calling on the public to help complete the deck by creating the final card – the 8 of clubs.
There are no restrictions or limitations to the way the card is designed – photography, sculptures, textiles, illustrations, street art or paintings are all welcome. The only rule is that it is an original work of art designed in a creative and interesting way.
Entries should be uploaded to Shelter’s microsite by Friday 21 August. The public will then have a week to vote on their favourite design before the top five will be put to painter, animation director and film-maker Simon Henwood who will choose the winner. Simon is creating the Two of Diamonds card for the exhibition.
The winning card will be hung alongside the others at the Haunch of Venison gallery in London’s Piccadilly, where the House of Cards exhibition which will run from Thursday 24 – Monday 28 September 2009.
The winning artist will also attend an exclusive launch party on the opening night.

Wahaca looking for an artist to paint for their new restaurant in Canary Wharf

Wahaca, the award winning restaurant, is looking for a Graffiti/ Street artist to fill a huge space (over 28m2) in its new site in Canary Wharf, opening October 2009.

Both street artists Oliver Shaw and Nuria, whose work exhibited at the Tate Modern last year have worked with Wahaca in the past and we are looking for an equally exciting artist to take over our site and leave their own particular mark.

Wahaca commissions sight specific pieces focusing on street and environmental art (visit their website for more information on artists they have worked with www.wahaca.co.uk and is willing to pay up to £4,000 for this particular commission (excluding materials).

To win: They need to see a piece of work by the artist that shows their style would be in fitting with Wahacas.  (It might be an idea to visit the site in Covent Garden (66 Chandos Place, WC2N 4HG) or White City (Westfield, Southern Terrace, W12 7GB) to get a feel for what Wahaca is about).

All entries will be posted onto their blog and readers will be asked to judge their favourite.  All entries must be submitted by the 23rd August and a winner will be announced at the beginning of September. Site visits can then be arranged with installation expected mid October. The artists work will also feature in our Wahaca paper OLA London of which 30,000 are printed and distributed as well as appear in materials/ websites associated with the competition and Wahaca.
