‘Making the Invisible Visible’ created such widespread awareness for the case of Troy Davis, that Amnesty International have worked with W+K again to extend the campaign across Europe.

Each of the new installations depict a close up of an individual’s face. With the image invisible from the front on view, as you approach the fence the face begins to take shape and show. A plaque on each site alerts passers-by to an Amnesty International website where they can take action in support of each of the individuals featured.

Mentalgassi have created work that appears in 26 sites across Wales, Ireland, Germany and Denmark. The 6 individuals highlighted in this year’s work include Fatima Hussein Badi, who faces the death penalty in Yemen after an unfair trial, Jabbar Savalan, who is in prison in Azerbaijan for his peaceful anti-government activism (including comments he made on Facebook), and Natalia Estemirova, a Russian human rights activist whose murder has not been brought to justice.

The cases are also part of Amnesty’s Write for Rights initiative, (December 3-17) which will see hundreds of thousands of people send messages of support to those around the world that have suffered human rights abuses.

We’ve been working on a small application for Facebook over the past few weeks and we’re finally ready to release it as public beta.

“UKSA Stream” provides a ‘stream of art near you’ and comes in the form of an application pulling geo-tagged photos from the UKSA Flickr group and cross-referencing these with the users selected area. As a user, you are able to choose to view all tagged art from the group or alternatively you can personalise your stream by entering a postcode, city or place to display art from within a set radias of that focal point.

Start using the app →

We hope you enjoy using the app and seeing some more art that is in your area. Let us know what you think and leave any comments/reviews for us to enhance the app in the future.

Works by Street artists Motorboy and Ziml will go on display at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery from 2 December as part of a revamp of the Modern Art Gallery on the top floor, which has been enabled by a generous donation of £30,000 by the Friends of Bristol Art Gallery. After the success of the Banksy show at the museum, this is a bold step forwards for both the museum and city.

Motorboy’s Lightbox ‘What’s the point of robbery when nothing is worth taking’ and Zimls large and striking Concrete Form II (pictured above) are among four new modern works purchased by the Friends. Both artists featured in the Crimes of Passion exhibition at the RWA in Spring 2009. They will be joined by ‘Broken Roundabout’ by local artist Gerald Cains who likes painting the decayed fringe of Bristol and Megan Davies’s Gran Turismo encapsulates beautifully the differences between generations today.

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is open daily 10.30am-5pm. late night opening every Wednesday until 8pm. Queen’s Road, Bristol, BS8 1RL. Free entry.

“Taking inspiration from the Dominican Republic’s thriving street art culture, street artists from London and beyond are taking part in a live event in Covent Garden, where locals and visitors can watch the art come to life before their eyes. Brugal Rum is hitting Covent Garden this weekend, bringing with them 3 artists: Jeba, Don and Ventza. The piece above was commissioned for the brand by Don.

Three giant columns will appear in the square on Saturday 27th November, and over the course of the weekend the artists will work to bring to life their own designs fusing together the influences of the Caribbean and UK. Artistic Londoners will also be able to flex their own creative muscles at the ‘pimp your t-shirt’ workshops happening in Navajo Joes (12pm-2pm & 4pm-6pm on Saturday 27th November) and Roadhouse (4pm-6pm on Sunday 28th November).

Bar goers will also be able sample Brugal cocktails at Navajo Joes from 12pm to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, and take advantage of special promotions including the free Brugal masterclass between 2.30pm and 4pm. Recently launched in the UK, Brugal is the Dominican Republic’s number one selling rum and is the only rum distilled, matured and bottled on the island. The Brugal family has managed the brand for five generations, and this tradition continues today, currently headed up by Franklin Brugal.

Brugal is perfect for serving neat, on the rocks or simply with a dash of soda or coke. Try a Brugal Santo Libre – Brugal Anejo Golden Rum, a dash of 7up, a wedge of lime and ice. To find out more about what’s happening, and to watch our artists in action, take a look for Brugal pimped my city on Facebook or follow them on Twitter @BrugalUK.

What do you get when you combine 1000 cans of paint, eight artists, two weeks and one village in The Gambia? Wide Open Walls, an art safari, and an experience like no other.

Eelus began working on this exciting new project having barely recovered from his impromptu solo show in New York; we grabbed him for a quick chat about his role as curator, the artists involved and his fear of spiders.

Tell us a little about the Wide Open Walls project
Wide Open Walls is basically a new and hopefully on-going, annual arts project thought up by Lawrence Williams, one of two founders of the Makasutu Culture Forest in The Gambia. Makasutu is around 1750 acres of forest now protected from deforestation, but is also part of a much larger project also set up by Lawrence and his Uncle, James English, which is the Ballabu Conservation Project. Ballabu is an 85 square kilometre area which incorporates 14 villages and 100,000 people and was set up by Lawrence and James to try and eliminate poverty through sustainable tourism.

With all this going on, as well as running the Mandina River lodges, 8 eco lodges designed and built by Lawrence and James within Makasutu, you’d think he’d be busy enough but he’s also a keen artist and very much into the street art scene. He’s part of a Gambian street art collective known as Bushdwellers who have already been painting stencils out there in and around the rural villages. One night after a few beers, the moment most great ideas come to mind, Lawrence contacted me and asked if I’d be up for flying out to stay with him for a couple of weeks to help paint one of the local villages in the hope of bringing more money into the area through increased tourism. From that point the idea grew, Lawrence gave me the daunting job role as project curator and since then I’ve managed to get seven other amazing artists on board to turn the village of Kubuneh into a giant open air arts project.

How did you choose the artists involved in the project?
I basically wanted to get a team together consisting not only of incredibly talented and driven artists whose style of work would fit this sort of environment, but who all have good reputations for being cool, easy going people. Two weeks is a long time to spend with people you don’t really know in such a strange and challenging environment, it was obvious there would be no time for egos or any other bullshit that some artists inherently drag around with them. So my artist A-Team consists of myself, Eine, Lucy McLauchlan, Broken Crow, Mysterious Al, Xenz, and Logan Hicks, who has also been very supportive and helped push the project forward since day one, including the organisation of the paint sponsorship from Sabotaz, so massive thanks to both of them. Each artist has a very different style and way of working so it’s going to be amazing to watch everything come together.

You can read the full interview over on Zeitgeist Magazine’s blog here

The team went down to Kicks N Canvas on Thursday night to have a few gratis drinks, hang out and check the work on display. We’ve got this neat video from Richie over at Nerdbanite, so thanks to them for the heads up!

“The Kicks N Canvas exhibition was organised by our friends over at SoleHeaven. Bringing together a love for Kicks & Art, 21 artists were asked to individually customise a pair of fresh white Nikes, their vision also overflowing onto 50×50cm canvases. Creativity sourced from the likes of: Goldie, ATG, Insa, Inkie and Ben Frost.

Be sure to get down there quickly as all items are up for sale with viewings closing on April 18th. If you can’t make it down then be sure to watch our video (thanks RohanBM) from last night’s opening night.”

What would you do with this blank wall? Have your say and spark debate. If you’re a street artist, aged 11-25, and would like to paint this space as a part of the Counted project, The Roundhouse want to know. You can peep the brief after the jump…

Here’s the brief…

Day-to-day, hour-by-hour, do decisions made by others have an impact on your life? What does politics mean to you? Is it just about the government, or is it the small things that affect your everyday life – in class, on the street, at work, on the bus, at home? Is it something you care about? What should people care about?

You have a blank canvas – get people thinking. Create a piece to provoke thought, engage people, ask questions and spark debate.

Background

The wall will be part of a series of projects…

- Counted, a timely documentary-play shedding light on why so many people don’t vote. At County Hall, on the south bank of the Thames opposite the Houses of Parliament, from 15 April-22 May.

- Do you feel Counted? a weekend of performance and debate for 11-25 year olds at

the Roundhouse, 17/18 April.

- Online activity instigating debate and interaction.

The projects aim to provide the opportunity for young people to explore solutions for issues that affect their daily lives and open up channels of communication between decision makers and young people. Most importantly, they’ll highlight how young people can make their opinions heard and be counted.

Format and budget
The large external-facing white wall, approx 3 x 14m, is on the corner of Chalk Farm Road and Regents Park Road. The Roundhouse can provide a reasonable budget for materials. Please send a breakdown with your design.

Application process
Send a design concept, summary of why you want to create the piece, and cost of materials to Bea Hankey at bea.hankey@roundhouse.org.uk or Roundhouse, 100A Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8EH. Please call Bea on 020 7424 8473 if you’d like more information.

Deadline for applications: Monday 15 March, 2009
Installation: by 29 March
