UK Street Art

Todd James aka REAS will be presenting an exhibition of new work entitled “Blood & Treasure” at the Laz Gallery on Greek Street on the 29th August.

James is an internationally recognised artist who was a co-creator of the seminal Street Market exhibition at Deitch Projects in New York, which was selected for the Venice Biennale in 2001. James’ work has also been shown at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Tate Museum in Liverpool, the Parco gallery in Tokyo, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco

Laz go onto explain that:

Protest images marked out in cartoon outrage, filled with recycled advertising cast-offs and corrupted child scrawls, these large-scale works of gouache and graphite smash the distance between death and jokes and between the viewer and what he or she probably goes around trying not to know about the present state of things.

Head down to the gallery on the 29th to get an insight into an artist who takes his work seriously but through cartoons!

Following on from Ben Turnbull’s succesful Lazarides show back in January of 2007, Steve and the gang have hauled the passionate critic of contemporary American politics back in for another fine exhibition. The show opens this Friday and runs until August 22, so get yourselves down there.

Like his most famous client, Banksy, art dealer Steve ­Lazarides is a little wary of the press.

Since the late 80s, when he used to put on club nights and “look after the affairs” of his artist mates, he’s quickly become one of the figureheads of London’s booming street art movement, with a high-profile gallery on Soho’s Greek Street, another in Newcastle, and a third which opened on Friday on Charing Cross Road. But he’s not ­prepared to spill any secrets about London’s most famous anonymous artist.

“I have no idea who he is,” he says, deadpan, when I ask how Banksy’s success has ­affected his fortunes. There’s an awkward silence. “I’m not going to talk about him. What he’s done is there in black and white for everyone to see.”

It’s not that he doesn’t want to be associated with him. “It’s just he’s not here with me, it’s ­impossible for him to ­answer, and I’m not going to answer for him. His success is well documented and has helped lots of other people.”

Lazarides Gallery is expanding. On 23 May Laz Inc will officially open a new space with a group show of work from all of its artists at 121 Charing Cross Road that will become a permanent space with a rolling show of Lazarides artists’ work.

Lazarides gallery is the primary source of work for artists such as Antony Micallef, Faile, Stanley Donwood, Ian Francis, Paul Insect, Conor Harrington, Invader, Lucy McLauchlan, David Choe, Miranda Donovan and Mark Jenkins. Lazarides’ artists’ works defy simple categories like ‘graffiti’, ‘graphics’ or ‘pop art’ – best described instead as ‘cult art’. With the Greek Street Gallery already firmly established as the primary cult art space in London, the Charing Cross Road gallery will double the viewing space, allowing the public to see a constantly evolving group show by exciting emerging and established artists.

The Outsiders are a band of cult artists who’ve been working outside the established world creating a scene of their own. The absolute core of cult art is its accessibility to its public. Lazarides Gallery has a genuine desire to be as inclusive and unconstrained by the art world as possible. This is reflected by the Lazarides client base which includes plumbers and pop stars, school kids and established art collectors.

Also launching in May will be an entirely new, interactive website, allowing all users to move virtually through the galleries and look at the work. Designed by Zombie Flesh Eaters, each of the Lazarides artists will have their own page, with a bio, current and past work, news section and picture gallery where news items and videos can be uploaded.

Zombie Flesh Eaters is an award winning illustration, animation, web design and graphics studio. The company was founded in 2000 by Creative Director Jamie Hewlett - co-creator of Tank Girl and Gorillaz, and since its inception has garnered much recognition for its work across the areas of music video, graphic design, press, web and live performance.

The talented Antony Micallef is set to launch an exhibition at Lazarides Gallery entitled Pictures from Palestine, the work on showcase are paintings influenced from his trip to Bethlehem Dec 2007. These paintings were completed directly after his return and are seen by him as a considered response to his experience while staying behind the wall.

In addition Antony Micallef has been invited to take part in a special print exhibition to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Curwen Studios later this year. The exhibition also includes Mark Hearlv and Paula Rego and the exhibition will be held in the Goodison room at the Tate Britain. Along with the invitation from the Royal Academy to take part in a group show showcasing new contemporaries. The 4 bronze, nickel plated 13ft sculptures from L.A will be displayed in the forecourt with new paintings displayed inside all this making Micallef a busy man this year.
