Grafter has spent the last couple of months getting this exhibition organised and it looks set to be a beauty. They’re holding a live paint outside the gallery on Saturtday April 11 with most of the 22 artists involved – plus a few special guests will be painting a selection of boards/canvases which will then be available to buy as and when they are completed.

The XC crew would also like people to bring household objects with them that they would like painted, the more unusual the better – they’ve already got one fella bringing his van and coffee table to get decorated.

Email Grafter for more info here.

ARTIST BIOS:

C215 (France)
After 2 years of active involvement with the association of the same name that he created C215 has spent recent years focusing exclusively on his own artistic practice and in 2007 was responsible for a stencil world tour travelling through Brazil, India, Morocco, Israel, Poland, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, England, Spain, Italy, Holland, Senegal, Turkey, Greece and continues to give art to people from all cultures and backgrounds.
www.myspace.com/c215

www.flickr.com/c215

Dan 23 (France)
After numerous art related careers has of late been concentrating on his own pieces. With a mix of watercoulor, poetry and large scale paintings Dan 23 focuses on the subject of black history and freedom, specifically the struggle of those trying to achieve it.

www.dan23.com

Least Wanted (New York)
Has tirelessly spent his days collecting over a centuries worth of American mugshots. Created as utilitarian instruments, and meant to be destroyed when obsolete, they survive as remnants of a bygone era of hard-copy originals, extraordinary visual windows on the past, and riveting physical artifacts, often accompanied by municipal ephemera.

http://www.flickr.com/leastwanted/

Bruno Leyval, (France)
Bruno focuses on the use of ink and has been honing this technique for several years. Often focusing on the struggles of minority cultures and racsim in the modern world. He is also the originator of Awakestudio.com, an arts website forging links between the arts and alternative culture.

http://www.brunoleyval.com/

MC 1984 (France)
With a history in sculpture MC1984 has in recent years turned his hand to roaming bestiary stickers invading the streets he travels and his comic inspired portrait work combining influences from print making and art history.

http://www.flickr.com/mc1984/
British collaborators Miss Bugs and Joe Black lead a grim but loving procession through hives of art world iconography.

For Miss Bugs, “2 Many Artists” celebrates their role as middlemen, spinning toward answers in the marketplace where art titans and street artists remake each other. Who owns art and why do people make it? With a warped sexiness, their work is fantastical and tangible as a bloody nose. Miss Bugs is an image-maker using collage and layering silk screens with other found materials to generate stories. Often the work is not about Miss Bugs, but the images themselves, displaced from their usual habitat.

Joe Black wields Lego’s like arrows — which is funny because they end up facing everyone head on. His technique of assembling photorealistic images from found objects is extremely advanced. The scarily precise formal elements are mirrored content-wise. His specific icons and way of depicting them highlight a sinister piece of pop culture and the art world that, through infinite generations, will not leave.

Harry Pye’s ‘Getting Better’ exhibition will take to the stage at Sartorial Art from March 25-April 18. The private view is on March 24 (tomorrow – Tuesday).

Getting Better’ is Harry Pye’s 2nd solo show at Sartorial. More than two years in the making, this is the biggest selection of his work to date. Harry Pye: “The show is called Getting Better because getting better is what I’m interested in doing. I know some people like to think that the best art was made by tortured souls but sometimes happy people make great paintings too.

I have been lucky enough to collaborate with artists such as Hannah Armstrong, Billy Childish, Marcus Cope, Luke Gottellier, Kes Richardson, Rowland Smith, and Geraldine Swayne. I think this show contains the best paintings I’ve ever had a hand in making. It’s a positive exhibition and it’s irony free. So why not come along, forget your troubles and get happy with me.”

The Private View of ‘Getting Better’ co-incides with the launch of issue 5 of Sartorial’s in house publication, ‘The Rebel’ magazine. The new issue has been designed by Harry Pye with help from Keith Sargent of Immprint. It features a revealing interview about art and religion with Billy Childish and Geraldine Swayne, as well as photography by Mat Humphrey and Charlie Dutton, new artwork by Gretta Sarfaty Marchant, and a new story by John Moseley.
