  1. You have got to be kidding me. The Beautiful Crime guys told me about PEN 1 a while back and said things like “expect big things” and “he could be the next Banksy.” They even claimed that there is nobody else out there doing what Banksy does. Maybe so, but there are 10,000 people ripping him off and/or trying to do what he does. This guy is another Mr. Brainwash: an embarrassment to good art and good satire. This concept is tired and poorly done.

And then there is his name. PEN 1, as in Public Enemy Number 1. That’s the name of a major white supremacist gang in California, and it’s one of the least original and most cheesy names I’ve ever heard a street artist go buy. Of course, he’s decided to modify the well-known logo for the band Public Enemy to make his logo. That just seems lazy to me.

The only redeeming feature of this piece is that it the stencil is reasonably well-cut and the piece has been reasonably well-sprayed, but there are thousands of artists who can do that.

    1. We’re not claiming he’s the new “Banksy” or anything like that. Like you say, the stencil is well-cut and sprayed… We can’t deny that there will be some people out there that will appreciate this…

      1. Sorry, I don’t mean to say that you’re claiming that. But Beautiful Crime seems to be marketing him as such (even if they aren’t using those exact words), so I guess my comments are more directed at them and their claims that he will be hitting the national press soon and whatnot. To me, the whole thing smacks of a guy using a cheesy PR stunt to cash in and sell a bunch of prints instead of a person making a real art or a political statement.

  2. How redundant. Only an idiot would think this was good or that there was even any point in making it. Anyone could do it.

Moss is old news. Stencils are old news.

So why hype up yet more formulaic dross?

  7. Saw this piece in the flesh today.

I personally thought it was an awesome piece of street art, very nice cuts on the stencil and every so tight and clean (no under or overspray).

Regarding the fact that anybody could do this, I would actually say not really as to paint a stencil with those cuts and achieve the end result without underspay is a feat in itself.

  8. It’s just a lazy 3 layer stencil. No fill, no shade, no style, just blocking it out. Yes, it’s taken time to cut, but did the world need another one of these? Boring.
