Brooklyn based José Parlá is set to open his highly anticipated first solo show at the Elms Lesters Painting Rooms (his representing gallery in the UK) on the 10th October.
“As our society moves forward through time, ever faster and in ever more complex patterns of living, we forget our spirit – our inner growth. We believe ourselves to be on the cusp of evolution but perhaps we are only experiencing an involution. The marks on the walls of our cities are perhaps a testimonial, like scars of a wounded civilization.”
Born in Miami in 1973, Parlá then moved to Puerto Rico. After being raised in the Caribbean island by his Cuban parents, Parlá returned to Miami at the age of nine where he began painting and remained there until being awarded a scholarship to Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia. Although mostly a self-taught painter, Parlá returns to Miami to study at the New World School of the Arts and travels through Central America. In 1997 Parlá arrives in New York, the home base and bridge to his new travels.
“Adaptation/Translation” explores the wanderings of urban populations and translates these personal experiences, making them visible as pieces that depict what lies beneath our surfaces.
We’re very excited about just how good this exhibition is going to be, so expect and update on Friday with images from the show.
Elms Lester will also be releasing a limited edition book to go alongside the exhibition, fully illustrated and with an essay by critical theorist Michael Betancourt, an authority on Parlá’s work. If their previous books are anything to go by then this is definitely one for the collection, Lavish, lush printed pages of work, hard bound with a classy exterior.
Check out a couple more of Parlá’s images after the jump…
