Burning Candy at Sartorial Art: competition

After four successful years in the pleasant surroundings of Notting Hill, Sartorial Art are moving on to bigger (literally) and better things. Choosing to throw their proverbial hats down slap bang in the middle of Kings Cross’ emerging art scene, the team are continuing in their forward-thinking direction.

Kicking things off in the spanking new 6000 foot space with a double exhibition, one of which will be Burning Candy, featuring the inescapable talents of the Before Chrome boys, Sweet Toof and Cyclops, plus Tek 33. The shows will run from October 15 – November 11, with the private view on October 15 from 5 – 11pm.

Accompanying Burning Candy is a book of the boys’ exploits over the years, rich with photography and interesting commentary, it’s a very good read. Sweet Toof, Cyclops and Tek 33 have kindly signed 10 copies for us, if you’d like one drop us an email to competitions@ukstreetart.co.uk to be entered into the draw. The winners will be announced on Tuesday October 14.

After the jump check out a selection of pics from the book. And we’ll have an interview with the artists in the lead up to the show so keep your eyes peeled for that too.

JR hits Foyles Bookshop on Charing X Road, London

This is going up right now as I am typing this and we’ve got a whole host of shots of the amazing work that JR and his team are putting up. He opens his brand new solo shows on 3rd October at both Laz on Charing X Road and Laz on Greek St. More on these later…

Typical of the man, he’s working on a HUGE scale (as always) and is covering almost all of the side of Foyles bookshop on Manette St just off the Charing X Road. With pieces on the opposite building and the whole front of the other building and a stunning piece on the side, this is whetting the appetite for what could be amazing shows come the 3rd.

New York gets hit with a new Banksy

It seems that the main man himself has continued on his tour of America, and this time putting up a huge mural on the corner of Wooster and Grand St. in Soho, New York.

There’s a thread over on the Banksy forum with updated pictures and people questioning the fact that he’s employed someone else to do the work for him – and whether it’s actually a “Banksy” or not. People are raising some interesting points:

“Ironically, this is a painting of a rat painting itself. Self-recognition is considered the highest form of intelligence. anyone else understand this irony?! By Banksy not painting this piece he references the art and the situation. The whole concept can therefore be considered a Banksy art project.”

Meanwhile, a statement from Laz goes by the following:

“No, there’s nothing by him in the show at all. He’s just planning his own big shows at the moment, so he didn’t have time to contribute.”

Fueling further rumours about an NYC show for the stencil don. Could it be? We’ll just have to wait and see I guess..

Ben Frost ‘Crapitalism’ solo show at Dray Walk

Aussie artist Ben Frost’s Crapitalism opens on September 26 at the Dray Walk in the East End, with the private view from 6pm on September 25 (tomorrow).

Increasingly known for poking fun at the manipulative techniques and tools of the advertising industry, ‘Crapitalism’, his first UK solo show, is no different. Using a ‘collage’ style of unlikely bed-fellows, his paintings are mash-ups of popular culture that probe our generation’s relationship with media and advertising.

We caught up quickly with the artist himself to learn a little more of his obsession with popular culture, here’s what he had to say:

“My relationship with popular culture is a love/hate affair. I always feel like vomiting when I’m in the supermarket – but not until I’ve scoured the brightly lit aisles and fondled the colourful packaging and read each and every perky slogan that whispers seductively to me.[…] This is Crapitalism” Ben Frost

No Walls are representing Ben for the Crapitalism exhibition. You can contact them for further information and sales enquries by hitting their site www.nowallsgallery.com
